May Adoptables
Each month, I host a Foster Photo Day as a free resource to help local fosters and rescues have access to professional imagery to help their pups be seen (and hopefully) adopted.
The goal is to give harder to adopt pups, such as the ones listed below, an edge in standing out among the millions of animals available for adoption.
These dogs are usually, but not always:
Older (usually 5 years of age or older)
Might have medical needs
Potentially have some kind of behavioral issues, like reactivity or needing to be the only pet
Are a restricted breed, like bully breeds
Are black in color (Black dogs are much less likely to get adopted in the shelter in a very common phenomenon called Black Dog Syndrome)
Or have just been overlooked for one reason or another
Have been in foster for a significant period of time; typically months, if not, years
Since the inception of this program back in October of 2021, we’ve photographed well over 200+ pups in foster across the Triangle through multiple rescues.
If you’d like to learn more about Foster Photo Day or register your own foster, you can do so here.
If you want to learn more about our Mission to help reduce animal overpopulation and homelessness in our state, read more about that here.
Without further ado, here are the adorable pups I had the pleasure to meet and photograph as part of our May Foster Photo Day! Feel free to share their profile or this post with anyone you know that might be looking to adopt.
LUCILLE - SECOND CHANCE NC
Meet Lucille, the epitome of charm. This laid-back lady is your ideal companion, always ready to share life's moments by your side. Lucille's journey began as a devoted mother, nurturing seven chubby pups while in the care of a local shelter. Since joining the Second Chance family, Lucille has captured the hearts of everyone she meets. Between you and me, she's become a favorite among our volunteers—shh, don't tell anyone else!
Currently, Lucille isn't too keen on the company of other dogs or cats, and who can blame her? She's just finished the monumental task of nurturing seven demanding little ones. Now it's her turn to be pampered and cherished. Could your family be the one to provide her with the love and care she deserves? If so, don't hesitate to reach out! We would be thrilled to introduce you.
Ms. Lucille is a breeze to walk on a leash, though she may show some confusion around bikes and might pull slightly to investigate. She has a particular fondness for one slightly obnoxious toy with peculiar sound effects but settles down beautifully in her crate. Don't be fooled by her perpetually pouty expression, it's all an act—Lucille is a happy-go-lucky gal with a face that resembles Eeyore's but a heart full of joy, ready to bring warmth and love into your home.
Johnson is such a playful, goofy, and loving pup! He enjoys playing with toys and his foster dog siblings, running around the yard, and cuddling up for a good nap. He knows basic commands, is house and crate trained and good in the car, and has been working on leash training.
He is still unsure of on-leash intros with other dogs so would benefit from further training. Luckily, he is food motivated (and gentle when taking treats) and pretty smart too! He would love a fenced in yard and perhaps even another playful doggy sibling.
His experience with other animals, like cats, is unknown, although he loves to chase squirrels (hasn’t caught one yet) but has been friendly with smaller dogs. He loves just about everyone he meets (as long as he can smell you first!) and is even good with kids. Johnson can’t wait to be your new best friend!
WILLIE JACK - PERFECTLY IMPERFECT PUPS
Willie Jack is a very sweet and funny puppy! He can be a bit goofy, curious, and sometimes clumsy, but he also loves attention and affection. He enjoys playing with his foster dog siblings 🐕, chewing on toys 🦴, and taking comfy naps 💤. Willie Jack is learning basic commands and working on house and crate training. He's good with other dogs and kids and behaves well in the car 🚗 and on a leash. Since he's still young, he needs someone patient to continue his training. Luckily, he's food-motivated and super cute!
Jack and Luna came into the shelter as a bonded pair. For this reason, their foster parents would like to keep them together and adopt them out as a pair also.
Here’s a bit about what Jack’s foster parents have to say about him:
Jack is a big, gentle giant! He is as sweet as he is strikingly beautiful. He has bright blue eyes, and a gorgeous coat. He can be shy at first, but once he warms up to you, all he wants is a good belly rub and to rest his big head on you. He loves to be pet, and will reward you with gentle swats to remind you to keep petting. He walks very well on his leash, and could walk for miles. He is low energy in the house, but needs regular exercise. He lives in a house with several other dogs and gets along with no issues. He is very apathetic to the more playful dogs, but we have seen him slowly thinking about playing with them. I think he will come out of his shell more, the longer we have him. He and his sister, Luna, love to go for walks together and are easily walked together by one person. They are so calm, they could easily live in an apartment or a house. They also do very well on trails, and would be great hikers with their excellent leash training and agility. Jack loves dog beds and fleece and that is where you will find him most of the time. He is crate trained, though he does not love to go in it, but is not destructive when left out of the crate. Neither he or Luna are typical huskies in the talking regard, and are actually very quiet dogs. They found themselves in need of rescue because they have a track record of being escape artists. They are not door dashers, but very capable of digging under a fence, or finding weak spots in the fence to bust through. Once out, they were difficult to get back, so we highly recommend leash walks only and/or supervised play in a securely fenced yard. We are looking for an experienced dog owner interested in adopting these two together. They are bonded and love being together. We fear separating them will bring anxiety and unnecessary difficulty to their lives. They seem to bring reassurance to one another and make each other feel more calm and confident. They are wonderful, very well behaved dogs. You will want to take them both once you meet them too!
Here is a bit about what Luna’s foster parents have to say about her:
Luna is as sweet as she is beautiful! Her stunning coat and piercing eyes are even more stunning in person. She even has blond eyelashes! We joke that if Barbie had a dog, it would be Luna! She is excellent on her leash, and loves to go for walks. She is low energy once she has been exercised. She has no interest in toys, but does enjoy playing with the other dogs in the house. She and her brother, Jack, love to go for walks together and are easily walked together by one person because they have excellent leash skills. We have taken them on trails and think they would be excellent hikers, as they navigate trails with ease and agility. Both dogs are very quiet, which is odd for their breed, but we have never heard them talk or howl. They are quiet and calm, and would even do well as apartment dogs. Both dogs are crate trained, but not destructive when left out of their crates. Luna is dainty and gentle, and wants your attention to be pet, but settles quickly. She is not very food motivated, but will take particular treats, and has been eating a mix of wet and dry food. If you have the space and love for these two beautiful dogs, please reach out to their foster at hickeym08@gmail.com.
